Federal Tax Credits for Energy Efficient Home Improvements - the fine print
Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, February, a Federal Tax Credit is available for new windows and doors that are installed in existing homes between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010 . The home must be the principal residence of the taxpayer.
Up to 30% of the cost of new windows and doors with certain energy criteria, up to a limit of $1,500 for home improvements in total, can be deducted from Federal taxes for that year.
Windows must have a U-factor of .30 or less and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient of .30 or less.
U-factor is a measure of heat flow through a window. The lower the U-factor, the more efficient the window unit is. That means less heat is lost from the home when it's cold outside; similarly less heat comes into the home when it's hot outside.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is the percentage of heat gained from both direct sunlight and absorbed heat. The smaller the SHGC, the more the window will reduce heat gain from solar energy into the home.
Unless the windows that homeowners buy meet the "U-factor less than .30/SHGC less than .30" criteria, they aren't eligible for tax credits.
To receive the tax credit, at tax time in April 2010 for the 2009 tax year or in April 2011 for the 2010 tax year, consumers must submit two items with their tax return:
- A completed IRS form 5695 - Note: wait for 2009 form
- The receipt for the window purchase and installation which occurred between January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2010.
In addition, homeowners must retain a Manufacturer's Certification - a signed statement from the manufacturer certifying that the product or component qualifies for the tax credit. The IRS encourages manufacturers to provide these Certifications on their website to facilitate identification of qualified products. Taxpayers must keep a copy of the certification statement for their records, but do not have to submit a copy with their tax return.
